The Best Leaders Are Learners

Everyone is familiar with the saying knowledge is power, but are there forms of knowledge that are more powerful than others? Here at Lonesome George and Co., we think so. We are strong believers in experiential learning and it seems like many people are following suit.

More and more educational programs are popping up around the world that are putting less emphasis on burying your nose in a book and more emphasis on getting out in the real world and learning by doing. The ability to memorize and regurgitate information back holds less value than it did in the past and the power of independent problem-solving abilities is finally becoming recognized and celebrated by educational systems throughout the world.

The dated, antiquated principles of education - being able to memorize, repeat, and recall does not teach youth to become creative, innovative adult thinkers. But these are the kinds of thinkers we need to tackle the problems our world will encounter in the near and distant future. This is why our company has aligned with programs such as Outward Bound and Ashoka’s Youth Venture, because you do not change the world by thinking within a confined thought process.  These programs give participants the skills to solve problems that they have not encountered before. They become truly empowered to develop a unique, well-rounded “toolbox” of skills from which to draw instead of relying solely on a step-by-step guide for addressing compartmentalized issues.

The new wave in education includes programs such as the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, the Academy for Software Engineering in New York City and the International Baccalaureate Program that spans numerous countries across the globe. The increase of interest in these programs is something that we are extremely excited about and makes us hopeful and eager to see what the future holds with a new breed of thinkers on the horizon.

The next generation of Agents of Change is studying hard for a very different type of test ahead.
